Lesson 35: The Cabin and the Lighthouse - Dark Land (Color Drawing)

Note: Remember to draw margins around your drawings as described in Lesson 33.

Children study the top image of the cabin and complete the following drill work:

  1. Black. Paint the entire picture with black. Sketch the house. Paint in the graded wash and into it paint the details.
  2. Blue and Brown. Sketch the house. Paint in the graded wash with blue. Add brown toward the foreground. Paint the distant trees with blue and the near trees with brown over blue. Paint the house with blue over brown.
  3. Yellow and Violet. Paint the graded wash with violet and toward the foreground change to yellow. Place a wash of yellow over the house. Paint the details with both yellow and violet.
  4. Red and Green. Paint the graded wash with red and then go over it with green. Let the green predominate toward the foreground. Paint the house with a light wash of red and the details with red and green. Paint the trees with red and green.

Children study the bottom image of the lighthouse and complete the following drill work:

  1. Blue. Paint entirely with blue.
  2. Black, Yellow, and Violet. Paint the sky black over violet. Make it dark. Sharpen the crayon and use the point. Paint the water with a graded wash of violet, adding black toward the foreground and yellow near the horizon. Place a light wash of yellow over the moon. Paint the lighthouse and land with yellow over black.
  3. Black, Red, Blue and Yellow. Paint the sky black over blue. Paint the water with a graded wash of blue. Add yellow toward the horizon and black toward the foreground. Paint the lighthouse black over red, and the moon with a light wash of yellow.
  4. Violet. Paint the whole with violet.
